Translating Educational Standards into a Task-Based Curriculum that Empowers Effective Formative Assessment

The purpose of this one-day workshop is to gain a practical understanding of the principles and best practices that are essential to the successful implementation an effective program of formative assessment, with task-based assessment and formative feedback as its core element. Participants will learn how to design a program of formative assessment that is fully integrated into the instructional process, informs next steps, and engages learners as collaborators who are fully involved in, and take ownership of their own progress toward greater proficiency.

Participants will learn:

  • how to translate the language of educational standards and learning objectives into terms that learners can fully understand and engage with
  • learn how to develop standards-based tasks that provide valid evidence of progress along the path toward greater proficiency
  • learn how to provide effective formative feedback that is evidence based and that informs next steps, for both the learner and the teacher
  • work in breakout groups to apply the principles learned in the morning’s sessions, using real samples of student work to generate effective formative feedback and plans for scaffolding new learning.
